Bikepacking with kids - 9 tips for the perfect adventure

Bikepacking is more than just a sport – it’s a true adventure.
And the best part? It’s a perfect experience to share with the whole family. Exploring new places together, spending time outdoors, and focusing on the essentials – these are the moments that create unforgettable memories.
But how do you ensure a relaxed and safe bikepacking tour with kids? CYCLITE Ambassador Werner Poebing covered almost 2,100 km along the West Coast of the USA in 20 days with his 13- and 15-year-old daughters.
His biggest takeaway: Planning is everything – but there must still be room for the unexpected.
Here are our 9 best tips to make your next family bikepacking adventure a success.
1. Plan together – Involve your kids
Let your children be part of the planning! With their own speedometer and navigation device on the handlebars, they can better estimate the daily stages and stay more motivated.
2. Start easy – Keep the first days stress-free
Especially for beginners, booking the first accommodation in advance can help ensure a relaxed start to the trip.
3. Find the right daily rhythm
Kids tend to have the most energy in the morning. A early start is worth it! Plan enough breaks and try to reach your destination before nightfall.
4. Gradually increase distances & plan rest days
Start with shorter stages and increase the distance step by step. Taking a break every few days helps keep motivation high.
- Ages 5–10: Approx. 30–50 km per day
- From age 13: Approx. 80–100 km per day
5. Pack smart – Distribute luggage wisely
Heavy gear should go on the adult bikes, while lighter bags can be carried by the kids – this helps them develop a sense of responsibility.
6. Safety first
Visibility is crucial! Blinking lights in the front and rear, reflective clothing, and bone-conduction headphones (so kids can still hear their surroundings) all contribute to safety.
7. The right gear for kids
Kids love having their own bikepacking equipment. CYCLITE bags also come in smaller versions – perfect for young adventurers.
8. The right minimum age
For traffic-free routes, there’s no age limit. However, for riding in traffic, kids should be at least 8–10 years old. A bike safety certificate can provide extra confidence.
9. Always pack enough snacks & water
Nothing is worse than hungry or thirsty kids. A small emergency supply of energy bars or instant food can save the day.
Bikepacking with Kids: An Adventure that Brings You Closer
A long-distance trip with the family requires flexibility and good preparation. While you can’t plan for everything (like a bear on the trail or a flat tire at dusk), having the right gear ensures that nothing will throw you off track.
